ITS Industry Organisations
AASHTO – American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials The AASHTO website is an easy way to obtain their publications, including their quarterly journal and their Transportation Policy Book. There are also links to the organization’s specialist department.
California PATH – Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways PATH is collaboration between the California Department of Transportation, the University of California, other public and private academic institutions, and private companies. PATH’s mission includes applying advanced technology to enhance highway safety and capacity, to reduce congestion and pollution, and conserve energy.
CEN – European Committee for Standardisation Particularly in transport technology, standardisation across Europe is much discussed. CEN is the meeting place for organisations looking to expand the market through voluntary standardisation.

EBRD – European Bank for Reconstruction and Development The EBRD was established in1991 to foster the move towards market – oriented economies and to promote private and entrepreneurial initiative in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
ECMT – European Conference of Ministers of Transport ECMT is an intergovernmental organization established by a protocol signed in Brussels in 1953. IT is a forum in which ministers responsible for inland transport can cooperate on policy. The Council of the Conference comprises the Ministers of Transport of 39 full member countries, five associate countries and three observer countries.
EIB - European Investment Bank The EIB was set up in 1958 as an autonomous organisation to fund capital investment projects, which help to further European integration and promote European Union economic policies.
ERF – European Road Federation The ERF, the branch of the International Road federation (IRF) in charge of relations with the European Union, represents the interests of organizations working in the road sector all over Europe, including car manufacturers, components industry, transport operators, insurance sector, trucking companies, and road builders.
ERTICO – Intelligent Transport Systems – Europe ERTICO is a partnership of industry, users, public/private operators and public authorities and is open to any European organisation with an interest in intelligent transport system (ITS). Through the website, visitors can learn more about current ERTICO initiatives.
ETTM on the web This site provides updates on Electronic Toll Collection and Traffic Management, mainly in the USA and Australia. Maps showing toll facilities in different states of the USA are also available, along with links to electronic tolling-related sites around the world.
European Parliament Originally purely a consultative body, the Parliament’s role in the legislative process has been gradually strengthened. Parliament and Council now have equal decision-making power in many areas.
FHWA – Federal Highway Administration The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is part of the US Department of Transportation and is headquartered in Washington DC. It provides resources and information to maintain and improve highways in the USA. The FHWA is responsible for administration of federal highway funds to the states.
ICC – International Chamber of Commerce ICC is the world business organisation that speaks on behalf of all types of enterprises all over the world. ICC promotes the market economy and open international investment and trade.
IBTTA – International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association IBTTA is an international association of toll operators and supporting organizations for the exchange of ideas to improve transport facilities funded by tolls.
IRF – International Road Federation The International Road federation (IRF) exists to encourage better road systems throughout the world and to help apply technology to give the best possible social and economic returns from investment in roads. It is a meeting point for 600 member organizations and governments worldwide.
IRU – International Road Union The International Road Union (IRU), through its national associations, represents the worldwide road transport industry, including bus, coach, truck and taxi operators. The IRU acts as the industry’s advocate in all international bodies that make decisions affecting road transport. It encourages strict vehicle maintenance and sound fleet management, and helps to make roads safer and less congested.
ITA – International Automobile Federation The International Automobile Federation (ITA), also known as the Federation Internationale l’ Automobile (FIA), represents the interests of motorists and motoring organizations worldwide. It is a non-profit-making organisation comprising 150 national motoring organizations, and over 100 mil.motorists. The ITA actively promotes the interests of motorists in international bodies such as the United Nations and the European Union.
ITA – International Touring Alliance The International Touring Alliance (ITA) or Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) is non-profit, non-governmental organisation which represents over 100,000,000 people worldwide through its open-air, touring and motoring associations. The ITA helps with breakdown assistance, repatriation of vehicles, customs transactions and visa applications, and promotes mobility and safety for tourists and travellers.
ITE – Institute of Transportation Engineers The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is an international educational and scientific association. ITE members are transport planners, traffic engineers, and other professionals responsible for proving safe and efficient surface transport.
ITS – America ITS – America’s website publishes the latest news from inside the organisation and keeps a watchful eye over relevant legislation in the USA.

OECD – Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD – comprises 29 member countries and enables them to discuss and develop economic policy on a domestic and international level.
OICA – International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers The International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) defends the interests of vehicle manufacturers, assemblers and importers. The Organisation’s Exhibition Committee coordinates international motor shows. OICA’s members include 40 national trade associations worldwide, of which 20 represent the car producing counties in Europe, America and Asia.
SINTA SINTA stands for Special Interest Network for Transport in Australia. It is a project for the provision of Australian Transport Information on the Internet. SINTA is being run by Sydney University of Technology, funded by the Australian Federal Department of Transport.
Texas Transportation Institute The Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) claims to be the largest university-affiliated transport research agency in the USA. Established in 1950 to cater for the needs of the Texas Highway Department, TTI has since widened its scope to all forms of transport – highways, air, water, rail and pipeline. TTI is a state agency and part of The Texas A&M University System.
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) is the forum through which the North American, European and central Asian countries come together to forge the tools of their economic cooperation.
University of Michigan ITS Research Center of Excellence The ITS Center is collaborative effort for advancing ITS technology. At present, partners not from within the University join as Center Advisory Board (CAB) Members and/or as Program Affiliates. The University and these partners support basic and applied research and coalition building activities through the Center.
VERTIS Based in Japan, the Vehicle, Road and Traffic Intelligence Society (VERTIS) is made up of representatives from ITS-related organizations, industry and academics. VERTIS is Asia’s major ITS body. www.itsinternational.com
